ARCHBISHOP WENSKI ELEVATES THE PARISH HISPANIC MINISTRY

History was made on Sunday, August 21, 2016, when the Most Reverend Thomas G. Wenski, Archbishop of Miami, celebrated the 1:30 p.m. Mass with the Spanish-speaking members of the parish. On concluding the Liturgical celebration in the church, the Archbishop moved to the parish hall with the jubilant members for picture-taking and light refreshment.

With the celebration and his Pontifical blessing, the Archbishop gave official recognition to the Hispanic Ministry in Saint Henry Parish. It was on November 1, 2015, that Father William (Bill) Muniz celebrated Mass in the Spanish language for the first time in this church. Father Muniz, a retired priest of the Archdiocese of Miami, had worked in other places including as a chaplain at the Holy Cross Hospital in Fort Lauderdale. He had been helping out in this and some other parishes but in 2015, he undertook, on behalf of the pastor, the project of beginning Hispanic Ministry at Saint Henry Parish. He started with a survey aimed at finding out the number of people that could benefit from the service. Questionnaires were distributed at all the Masses during the course of a month and about fifty-one (51) persons signed up. Those who signed up were originally from nine (9) different countries of Latin America. A significant date was chosen for the first gathering for a Mass. It was November 1, the day all the Saints from every nation on earth are honored together. Father Muniz had this announcement spread to Latinos living north and south, east and west of Saint Henry Church. The result was that about eighty seven (87) persons gathered for the inaugural Mass. This number was beyond what was expected and became a pointer to the existing fact that there was a need for Hispanic Ministry at Saint Henry’s. It was necessary to celebrate Masses regularly and address the needs of the Latinos in their familiar language. From that date Father Muniz has been celebrating Masses for them every Sunday and attending to their other pastoral needs.

The number has continued to grow. Apart from previous counts, here is the March census record: March 6 – 205; March 13 – 187, March 20 – 212, March 27 – 245. With this evidence, it is reasonable to admit that ministry to the Hispanics around Saint Henry Parish is needed and has come to stay. When the Archbishop received the news of the development he was quite delighted and asked to be updated on the progress as time went on. On his visit on August 21, he saw for himself, invoked God’s abundant blessings on all and on leaving, left behind good wishes for ongoing progress.
